Το θεσμοθετημένο εργαστήριο υποδομών μεγάλης κλίμακας «Ήφαιστος» της Σχολής Θετικών Επιστημών του ΔΙΠΑΕ, το οποίο εδρεύει στην Πανεπιστημιούπολή της Καβάλας, στοχεύει στη δημιουργία ενός οικοσυστήματος καινοτομίας, τόσο σε τοπικό όσο σε διεθνές επίπεδο, έχει κατασκευάσει 15 νέα καινοτόμα προϊόντα, τα οποία έχουν λάβει Διπλώματα Ευρεσιτεχνίας από τον Οργανισμό Βιομηχανικής Ανάπτυξης. Το εργαστήριο στελεχώνεται κύρια με μέλη ΔΕΠ του ΔΙ.ΠΑ.Ε. από το  Τμήμα Χημείας, το Τμήμα Φυσικής το Τμήμα Πληροφορικής και μεταδιδάκτορες με γνωστικό πεδίο τις Θετικές Επιστήμες, Επιστήμες Μηχανικού,  Νομικές, και Κοινωνικές Επιστήμες.

Το εργαστήριο “Ήφαιστος“, διαθέτει ένα υπολογιστικό κέντρο όπου λειτουργεί το υπέρ υπολογιστικό Σύστημα (GRID – Computing Center), περισσότερες από 20 θέσεις εργασίας.

Επιπλέον, διατίθενται χώροι για έρευνα μεγάλων επιστημονικών οργάνων συνολικής έκτασης 1.000 τ.μ.. Οι μέχρι σήμερα τομείς δράσεις του καλύπτουν ένα ευρύ φάσμα σχετικό με την επιστήμη υλικών όπως η εξέλιξη της έρευνας πάνω σε νέα καινοτόμα υλικά και η εφαρμογή τους στην καθημερινότητα. Ενδεικτικά, άλλοι τομείς δράσης είναι οι ηλεκτρολογικές μετρήσεις εξ αποστάσεως και τα συστήματα μετρολογίας, ρομποτικής και ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας.

Στο εργαστήριο “Ήφαιστος“ λειτουργεί Τομέας Ερευνών σε θέματα Διακινδύνευσης, Κίνδυνων, Κρίσεων και Ασφάλειας με Διευθυντή Ερευνών τον Δρ Μιχάλη Χάλαρη, Επίκουρο Καθηγητή του Τμήματος Χημείας του Διεθνούς Πανεπιστημίου της Ελλάδος και Υποστράτηγο Π.Σ. (ε.α). Το Επιστημονικό Δυναμικό το οποίο συγκροτεί την ανωτέρω δομή, παρέχει επιστημονικές υπηρεσίες σχετικές με την ανάλυση και διαχείριση ανθρωπογενών και φυσικών καταστροφών, οργανώνει και υλοποιεί  σειρά δράσεων σχετικών με θέματα Πολιτικής Προστασίας.
